Compounding Medications

Almost a forgotten era of medicine, pharmaceutical compounding has made a renaissance in the last 20 years. Physicians are excited, health is enhanced, and lives are saved by medications tailored to the specific needs of individuals. This is pharmacogenomics, when medicine is designed for each unique individual. According to the FDA, it is pharmacy of the future.

We are an industry leader and invest heavily in training, equipment, the highest quality supplies and finished product testing. With more than 60 years of compounding experience, we take compounding to the highest levels of quality, purity, accuracy and convenience in packaging.

FOR MORE THAN 60 YEARS O’Brien Pharmacy has fulfilled physicians’ grandest visions by creating custom medications for their patients. Following are some of the different types of preparations we can compound, but it is far from an exhaustive list.  Literally tens of thousands of possibilities exist for virtually every specialty of medical practice!

  • Pre-surgery/Infection Control
  • Pediatrics
  • Cornea
  • Corneal Scarring/Haze
  • Dry Eye
  • Cancer
  • Cataracts
  • Eye Infections:  Bacterial, Acanthamoeba, Fungal, Viral

THE O’BRIEN PHARMACY DIFFERENCE IN STERILE COMPOUNDING

  • EVERY preparation is made by a pharmacist, not a technician.
  • As a PCAB-accredited ® compounding pharmacy, we are inspected for compliance with applicable United States Pharmacopeia standards, Board of Pharmacy regulations and other stringent quality-control requirements. This, along with our own internal requirements, forms the basis for our extensive policies and procedures and documentation. O’Brien Pharmacy began addressing these issues in 1998, long before they became regulatory.
  • Documentation includes endotoxin, sterility, and potency testing.
  • Individual parameters include:
    • Compatibility
    • Stability
    • Solubility
    • Sterility
    • Endotoxins
    • pH and buffer systems
    • Isotonicity
    • Preservation options
  • Our equipment is state-of-the-art, maintained to manufacturer specifications, calibrated and verified as applicable.

Clinical Services

As Fellows of the American College of Apothecaries, Harry Everett and Lisa Everett were dedicated to consulting with patients and keeping patient records for every prescription decades before it was required. It was never enough to simply hand over a medication to a patient without making sure that he/she understood the potential benefits and side effects, as well as how to use and store the medication. Through the years, this basic format has extended into what is now known as the O’Brien Pharmacy Consulting Group and our holistic clinical staff. We’ve broadened our scope to include not only conventional prescriptions and compounded medications, but also the appropriate use of micronutrients, nutraceuticals, and homeopathy.

We have in-house continuing education for all staff, so our technicians are savvy about our supplements and their uses and our pharmacists are able to offer knowledgeable recommendations. Many staff members also attend scientific symposiums in order to learn more and keep up with the latest scientific developments. Our two clinical consulting pharmacists see patients by appointment to discuss, assess, and recommend lifestyle changes, supplements, and necessary medications in order to help patients diminish or eliminate diseases and disorders or to simply make the most of living as healthy and happy of a life as possible. With our knowledge, we are experienced in combining the best of medicines from around the world, the safe and effective use of supplements with or without pharmaceuticals, and drug tapers.

We invite you to learn more about our consulting pharmacists and all of our staff on our Meet the Staff page. If you are interested in making an appointment, please give us a call.

Consulting With a Certified Clinical Nutritionist

At O’Brien Pharmacy, our Certified Clinical Nutritionist (CCN), Lisa Everett Andersen, is also a registered pharmacist who has worked in many facets of pharmacy, is the president of the CCN organization International and American Associations of Clinical Nutritionists, and is working on her degree in classical homeopathy.

In a consultation, Lisa analyzes an individual’s lifestyle to help them literally and figuratively cut through the fat and achieve optimal health. Because she combines her education as a consulting pharmacist and a CCN, her advice is sought out by physicians, other practitioners, consumers, and patients alike. She works with anyone with general health concerns to those with multi-system malfunctioning, cancer, auto-immune diseases, those who are in need of bio-identical hormone replacement, as well as those who have suffered medication over-dose at the hands of multiple practitioners, from pediatrics to geriatrics. And, of course, she will recommend what foods are best to eat, which ones are not, and explain why.

It is never too late to improve the quality of life. We are not bound to illness by genetics, as they dictate only 5% of our health. Science has shown us that our bodies regenerate themselves every 7 years. So what will you do today to build the body you’ll have in 7 years? Will you choose to ask for the help you might need? If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired, it is time.

Each consultation includes a medical portfolio, which contains several articles and ideas of how to organize their healthcare. As Lisa is frequently booked out a few months, patients can get started by reading her book, Learning to Thrive in a Toxic World and the Impact of Clinical Endocrinology and BHRT, as it explains many of the lifestyle changes they will encounter and can save them money in consultation fees. The book also serves as a long term reference.
