Progesterone Oil Injections 

This drug was compounded for you by O’Brien Pharmacy according to your provider’s prescription. Uses 
Progesterone oil injection is an intramuscular (IM) hormone injection that can be used for a variety of reasons, such as helping you achieve/sustain pregnancy, treating uterine bleeding due to hormonal imbalances, and treating irregular menstrual cycles. 

Side Effects 
Some general side effects of the medication include injection site irritation, redness, feeling tired, stomach cramps, enlarged/tender breasts, weight gain, vaginal bleeding, spotting, and lowered interest in sex. 

Precautions 
Please call your provider right away if you experience any of the following signs of allergic reaction such as hives, swelling of the mouth or face, depression or mood changes, symptoms of a blood clot such as chest pain, coughing up blood or swelling, warmth, or pain in a leg or arm. 

Directions 
While occasionally used at home, progesterone injection is usually administered to you by a health-care provider or your caregiver. Your provider will provide instructions regarding the dose and manner in which the medication should be injected. If you have not received administration information from your provider, please check with the office before using this medication at home. An IM injection is a shot given into the muscle. This medication can also be administered by “deep IM.” Please clarify with your provider if deep im injection is required. You have been supplied with two types of needles, alcohol swabs, and syringes. Use the lower gauge number (18g) and 3ml syringe to draw up the medication, then switch to the needle with the higher gauge number (22g, 1.5” length). Swab area of the buttocks with the alcohol swab. Let dry. Insert needle in the upper-outer quadrant of the buttock using a quick dart-like motion. The needle should be inserted completely into the skin. Use slow, steady pressure on the plunger to inject all the medication. Dispose of needles in a sharp disposal box, or a hard plastic container. Do not use the solution if it is cloudy, leaking or has particles present. Vials are single use but have significant overfill to aide in drawing up the medication. Draw up your dose and discard any remaining medication.  

Storage 
Store in refrigerator for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 45 days. Keep medication away from children or pets.  

Do not dispose of medications in waterways. Do not flush unused medications or pour down a sink or drain.
