Uses
This medication can be used to treat pain or as a local numbing before a procedure, depending on the ingredients and setting.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include temporary redness or mild irritation at the application site, burning, tingling, itching, pale, or slightly swollen skin. Less common effects that should be reported are rash or allergic reaction, dizziness or drowsiness, ringing in the ears, metallic taste, numbness beyond the application site. Seek medical attention if you have difficulty breathing, severe rash or swelling, blue or gray skin discoloration (possible methemoglobinemia, especially with benzocaine), or seizures or irregular heartbeat indicating possible systemic toxicity. While topical preparations tend to have less systemic side effects, some ingredients could cause dizziness drowsiness, use caution until you know how this medication affects you.
Precautions
For external use only. Occluding the site or applying heat after application increases the chances of side effects. Do not occlude (cover) or apply heat pads unless instructed to do so. Do not use if you have an allergy to any ingredients. Do not use on large areas unless directed. Inform your provider if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medications. Use caution if numbing face, feet, or hands as injuries may occur. Do not use on broken or infected skin.
Directions
Apply a thin layer as directed. Wash hands after use unless hand is the intended application site. If used prior to a procedure, allow time for onset of numbing effect.
Storage
Store at room temperature. Caution packaging may not be childproof. Keep away from children and pets. Do not flush unused medications or pour down a sink or drain.
