Fellowship Recognizes Excellence in the Art and Skill of a Compounding Pharmacist.

The Fellowship Program of the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists (IACP) offers pharmacists the opportunity to be recognized by their colleagues and to be distinguished in their communities as specialists in the art and skill of compounding pharmacy.  There are currently 63 pharmacists in this elite group who have shown their commitment to the profession of pharmaceutical compounding.

Those pharmacists applying for Fellowship in IACP must participate in a yearlong process.  Before being inducted, candidates must meet stringent requirements designed to demonstrate their commitment to patient care through quality pharmaceutical compounding and their commitment to the highest ethical and professional standards.

“We believe our members are among the best in the field, and this program gives them an opportunity to demonstrate to their patients, physicians, and colleagues their higher level of expertise and commitment to the profession of compounding pharmacy,” says L.D. King, IACP Executive Director.  “Fellowship allows a pharmacist to set an example of excellence in their profession.  I encourage all of our members to consider this program and all it can bring to their practice.”

Prior to submitting an application for Fellowship, pharmacists are required to earn a set amount of points in various categories of service and professional involvement.  Points are awarded for continuing education, presentations made, published articles, professional and civic service as well as professional awards.  These categories are designed to maintain a balance between subject areas, and to ensure that IACP Fellows are diversified in their practices as well as in their community activities.

Their peers then interview the candidates that meet these requirements and conduct inspections of their pharmacies.  During the inspection, inspectors look for cleanliness, organization, space, equipment for compounding, and reference materials.  Two or three Fellows conduct the interviews during pharmacy meetings.  Interviewers seek to learn if each candidate complies with IACP’s Code of Ethics and ask questions to gain understanding of the pharmacist’s practices and commitment to quality.  Questions are also asked about marketing practices, a willingness to share with colleagues and customer service philosophies.

“Serving as Fellowship Committee Chairman, I have the unique opportunity to observe the outstanding dedication and commitment these pharmacists have for their profession,” says Bob Hoye, R.Ph., FIACP.  “I have experienced firsthand the confidence my Fellowship designation instills in both me and my patients.”

IACP established the Fellowship Program in 1997 to distinguish those pharmacists who are exemplary in their commitment and professionalism to the practice of pharmaceutical compounding.  We congratulate all of our Fellows on their continued dedication to their profession and urge our other members to experience this distinction and set a goal worth achieving.
